Recovering Failed Subscription Payments by WhatsApp: What Works in Latin America

In Latin America, many customers read WhatsApp long before email. How to send failed payment reminders by WhatsApp with Stripe: Meta's template rules, phone numbers, timing, and what we see in real data.

If your subscribers are in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina or most of Latin America, a failed payment email is often the last thing they read. WhatsApp is where they actually answer. In the accounts that use Rebounce, about 7 in 10 WhatsApp payment reminders that reached the customer's phone were opened. Email doesn't come close to that. And it's the channel where most "my card failed" conversations already happen anyway.

WhatsApp is also more work to set up than email. Business messages have to follow Meta's template rules, and none of it works if you don't have the customer's phone number. This guide covers what you need, what to send and when, and the mistakes that make WhatsApp recovery quietly send nothing.

~72%
of WhatsApp reminders that reached the phone were read (522 of 722)
44%
of customers who opened the payment link paid on that page

What you need before sending anything

  • The customer's phone number, in international format. Stripe doesn't ask for it by default. If your checkout never collected it, WhatsApp recovery has nobody to send to. Turn on phone number collection in Stripe Checkout, or save it on the customer from your own signup form.
  • A WhatsApp Business sender. A phone number registered with Meta through the WhatsApp Business Platform, usually through a provider such as Twilio. A regular WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app number can't send these messages automatically.
  • Approved message templates. A business can only start a conversation with a template Meta approved in advance. Payment reminders fall under the utility category: a factual notice about something the customer already has, with no promotion in it.
  • One template per language and per step. If you send a reminder on day 0 and another on day 5, in Spanish and in English, that's four templates to get approved.
Customer paying with a phone

The whole point is a short message with a link the customer can open and pay from, on the same phone.

What the message should say

Short, factual, and with one link. Templates with a sales tone or vague wording get rejected, and they also read as spam to the customer. A template that works:

Hola {{1}}, no pudimos procesar el pago de {{2}} de tu suscripción a {{3}}. Puedes actualizar tu tarjeta y pagar aquí: {{4}}
  • Name the business and the amount. The customer has to recognize the charge immediately, or they'll ignore it as a scam.
  • Link straight to a payment page. No login. The page should let them enter a new card or confirm 3D Secure and pay in one step.
  • Write in the customer's language. A Spanish template for Spanish-speaking customers, even if your product is in English.

When to send it

Send the first WhatsApp the same day the payment fails, alongside the email. A few days later, send a second one only if the invoice is still unpaid. Then one closer to the end of your retry window. Stop the moment the invoice is paid. Getting a "your payment failed" message after you've already paid is the fastest way to annoy a customer who stayed.

Avoid late-night sends in the customer's timezone. A payment reminder at 2am feels like collections, not a helpful notice.

The mistakes that make WhatsApp send nothing

  • No phone numbers in Stripe. The most common one. Everything is set up and the channel never fires, because no customer has a phone saved. Check how many of your customers actually have one before counting on WhatsApp.
  • Landlines and office numbers. B2B customers often give a company landline. WhatsApp can't deliver to it. Ask for a mobile number specifically.
  • A missing template for one step. If the day 5 template isn't approved yet, that step can't go out. Get all the steps approved before you turn the channel on.
  • Wrong number format. Numbers saved without the country code fail. Mexico mobile numbers are a frequent source of format problems.

What we see in real data

Across the businesses that use Rebounce, most of them in Mexico and Latin America, 522 of the 722 WhatsApp reminders that reached the customer's phone were read. That's a minimum, because some people turn off read receipts. One telecom in Mexico had about US$13k in failed renewals paid over four months after reminders by WhatsApp, SMS and email. The common thread wasn't the channel by itself. It was a short message the customer actually saw, plus a link that let them pay right there: 44% of the customers who opened that link paid on the page.

If your customers are in Latin America and you only send email, WhatsApp is probably the biggest gap in your recovery. Rebounce sends these reminders with pre-approved templates in Spanish and English, so you don't have to register templates with Meta yourself. If you want to see the other steps of a full sequence, the template library has the email and SMS versions, and why Stripe payments fail explains which failures need the customer to act.

Preguntas frecuentes

Can I send failed payment reminders by WhatsApp with Stripe?+

Stripe doesn't send WhatsApp messages itself. You need a WhatsApp Business sender, approved message templates, and the customer's mobile number saved in Stripe. A tool like Rebounce connects to Stripe and sends the reminders for you, using its own approved templates.

Do WhatsApp payment reminders need Meta approval?+

Yes. A business can only start a WhatsApp conversation with a template that Meta approved in advance. Payment reminders go in the utility category and must be factual, with no promotional content. Each language and each step of the sequence is a separate template.

Why is WhatsApp not sending to my customers?+

The most common cause is that customers have no phone number in Stripe, because checkout never asked for it. Other causes: the number is a landline, it's saved without the country code, or the template for that step isn't approved yet.

Is WhatsApp better than email for failed payments?+

In Latin America, usually yes. In Rebounce's data, about 72% of WhatsApp reminders that reached the phone were read. The best results come from using both: email for the record, WhatsApp for the customer to actually see it, each with a direct link to pay.
